Congratulations are in order for Mr. Tim Brallier, our Wednesday evening volunteer. Tim will be graduating from Columbia High School on June 2. Tim enjoys drawing, collecting fossils, and fishing. He is involved in the fantasy and role-playing club at the high school. Tim plans to work at part-time jobs while getting his comic book series published. Congratulations, Tim – we are certain you successful at whatever you choose to do! We wish you well in your writing/illustrating career – and we’ll be sure to have your books in the library when they are published.
Summer Reading program regsitration packs may be picked up beginning June 3. This year’s theme is STEM: “Build a Better World”. Again, there will be four levels: Read Aloud (ages four and younger), Junior (ages five to nine), Tween (ages 10 to 12), and Teen (ages 13 through 19). If your child(ren) are at the preschool or junior levels of SRP, be sure to check your packet for a special challenge from Hank the Health Hero of Children’s Dental Health Services.

Last year’s sports scavenger hunt was a success, so we are going to again post signs to find throughout Columbia this summer! Beginning June 5, we will be posting pictures of famous landmarks in local businesses here in Columbia. The picture will read “Build a Better World”. When you find a sports poster, write down the name of their business on your entry paper. Children who find all the posters at various businesses and correctly identify their location will receive a free book! Entry forms may be picked up beginning June 5.
Come read aloud to Biggie the Cat on Wednesday, June 7, at 1:30 PM. All ages welcome, including adults.
Our first summer program is Monday, June 12 with a visit from “Elephant and Piggie”. You’ve met them in Mo Willems’ picture books; now meet them in “person”. Make your own Elephant or Piggie puppet! Coloring, photo ops, and fun – this program will be held at 1 PM at Park School’s gym. PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE.
Children’s Dental Health Services on Locust Street will be back with Hank the Health Hero on Tuesday, June 13. Cheer on Hank as he becomes the champion of healthy choices. Set out on a quest with Hank to fight off germs. All show participants will receive tips and tools for making healthy choices at home along with an invitation to join Hank’s Hall of Health Heroes! Especially for ages 3 to 8 and their caregivers. Tuesday, June 13, at 10 AM
June 15th’s program takes us to Sahd’s Metal Recycling facility on Lancaster Avenue. We will be meeting at Sahd’s at 10 AM for a tour. Feel free to bring along bags of cans to recycle. Participants MUST wear closed toes shoes or sneakers – if you have on sandals or flip-flops, you won’t be able to go along on the tour! Tour will last about 45 minutes. Thursday, June 15, at 10 AM – meet at Sahd’s on Lancaster Avenue.
June 19 brings us a concert in the Locust Street Park gazebo with “Phredd” McNaughton. Fred’s description from his website is: Dad of EIGHT, WJTL Radio Personality, & Ukulele Singer Songwriter. Ryan the BugMan returns on Tuesday, June 20 with “Bugging a Better World”. This program will focus on the ways insects improve our planet – such as clean water, pollination, food for animals and even their unusual defense strategies. Offers a close look into the world of insects using incredible displays and lots of neat facts about insects and their related friends. Also expect LIVE Bugs as always! Those who wish to will be given an opportunity at the end of the show to hold the bugs. Tuesday, June 20, at 10 AM.
Our Reading Education Assistance Dog Spencer’s next public visit will be Thursday, June 22, at 10 AM. Please call 684-2255 or email lgreybill@columbia.lib.pa.us to reserve a 15 minute time slot to read to the dog. Ages 5 and older.
We return to the park Gazebo on Monday, June 26, when “Miss Maggie Sings” to “Build a Better World”. Miss Maggie explores all things building – from houses and sandcastles to friendships and making our world a better place. All ages welcome. Monday, June 26, at 10 AM.
On June 27 we host Bricks 4 Kidz® who will provide some “Ferris Wheel Fun”. First designed for the World’s Expo in Chicago in 1893, the Ferris Wheel is still a favorite at amusement parks around the world. Students will learn a lesson in imagination and problem- solving as they discuss the giant axle that powered the original ride. We will find out what happened to the original Ferris Wheel, and then build our own version of the famous ride! Especially for ages 6 through 12. Tuesday, June 27, at 10 AM
Young Adult Book Clubs will meet in the Gazebo this summer on Wednesday, June 28. Middle School students meet at 1 PM to discuss “Life in the Fat Lane”. High School students meet at 2 PM to discuss the “Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, and June”. Books may be picked up from Mr. White the last week of school or from Miss Lisa at the library afterwards.
The last family activity for June is Family Fun Night on Wednesday, June 28, at 5:30 PM. Join us for Make and Take Sand Art. This program will be held outside, weather pending. No sign-up is required, program will run from 5:30 to 7:30 or until supplies run out. Ages 4 through 12, MUST be accompanied by a caregiver. Limit one sand art bottle per child.
Our Adult Community Program will be held Monday, June 5, at 6 PM. A power point slide show titled “Your Library: Now and Soon” will be presented. The program will showcase all the current programs and services your library offers now. Slides will also show proposed construction changes, including drawings of our new addition. If you have been wondering what the library might look like after the addition is put on, this is the program for you!
Mitzi Sanchez’s crochet class will be held on Tuesdays, June 14 and June 28, at 6 PM. Mitzi is such a good teacher that this class is growing as well! Please come out and join us. Mitzi will let you know what size crochet hook you will need for your project – she does have hooks you may use in class to get you started. All you need bring is scissors – we even have donated yarn! Experienced crocheters – bring your current project!
The last Saturday of June – June 24 – brings us the annual Antique and Craft show in Locust Street Park – and also our largest book sale of the year! Please join us here at the library between 8 AM and 2 PM (note time change) for some great deals! The book sale will be held ENTIRELY OUTDOORS – and the library will be closed to the public on Saturday, June 24. “Multi Media Madness” includes books, music CDs, DVDs, video games, and more. Having the entire sale outdoors allows all with limited mobility to enjoy browsing and also will draw the crowd from the Antique, Art, and Craft Show.
