Columbia Public Library Newsletter – August 2019
It’s hard to imagine that one year ago on August 1st, we re-opened the doors to our newly remodeled library! I hope everyone is enjoying the new facility and all it has to offer. Summer Reading continues to be in full swing for the first weeks of August. But first, let’s have a look at some new books releasing this month:

Our community program for August is a Summer Reading program that is always a hit with all ages. Jesse Rothacker (with his assistant Kenny) will present “Rocketing Reptiles”. In the mysterious universe of reptiles, it seems their armor, invisibility & locomotion makes them a lot like extra terrestrials. Has a reptile ever gone into space? Find out on Monday, August 5, at 6 PM in Locust Street Park next to the gazebo. All children must be accompanied by caregiver. Opportunities to pet / hold the reptiles will be provided for those who choose to do so. Sponsored in part by Thrivent Financial.
Other Summer Reading Programs for August:
Thursday, August 1, at 10 AM brings Mark DeRose to the Park Elementary cafeteria. Mark’s band, the Dreadnought Birigade, has played with popular artists and even at a Baltimore Ravens halftime show. Mark has recently started focusing more on children’s music. His show combines his love for the visual arts with his love for songwriting. Mark’s songs, art work, videos and the show’s activities all complement one another in an effort to communicate his message that encourages his young listeners to embrace and enjoy life to its fullest, be creative individuals, and most importantly, confidently be themselves. Be sure to stay and read aloud to Tommy on Thursday, August 1, at 11 AM! Our Reading Education Assistance Dog is loving your summer visits. Tommy is a big sweet boy who loves to hear just about any story you want to read – he likes superheroes and princesses just the same! Bring your favorite books to read aloud or use one from the library. In the Park cafeteria at 11 AM, right after the Mark DeRose concert.
A serious traffic tie-up on route 272 prevented “Miss Maggie” (Peggy Gernerd) from visiting in June. She is rescheduled for Friday, August 2, at 1 PM in the Park Elementary Cafeteria (it may be too hot for the gazebo in August) when “Miss Maggie Sings a Universe of Songs and Stories”. Miss Maggie is back with Spaghetti Head Fred and more crazy fun as we celebrate the wonder of our solar system. Lots of silliness, dancing, and audience participation. For all ages.
Ran’D Shine is an illusionist who first visited us last year. Ran’D’s show is a bit different from many magicians’. For one, he involves all ages in his show – adults as well as children. Secondly, he has a truly uncanny ability to read your mind! Ran’D’s responses will not only put chills down your back, but also bring tears to your eyes – as he did to me last year! Our final program for the summer of 2019 will be Matthew Dodd’s concert “Songs and Stories of Space”. Matthew’s previous concerts guarantee your kids will jump, move, dance, and even do the limbo! We’re hoping for cooler weather to use the Gazebo but may have to settle for the Park cafeteria if it’s too hot. Please call or check for signage a day or two prior to event! Tuesday, August 13, at 10 AM.
Tommy, the Reading Therapy Rottie, will make his second visit after the Matt Dodd program. As with August 1st, you may bring your own books to read aloud to Tommy or use one of ours. If the concert is in the Gazebo, read aloud sessions will be held in our Children’s Room at the library. If the concert is at Park Cafeteria, read aloud sessions will take place there. Tuesday, August 13, at 11 AM.

Yarn arts groups for August:
Crochet along with Kasey will be held August 6 and August 20 – no class on August 13 and 27. Our project for the month is dishcloths. Kasey will be showing us some new stitch designs!
Knitting with Gaile will be held August 8, 15, 22, and 29 – no class on August 1.
Absolute beginners are welcome at both of our yarn arts classes – Gaile and Kasey are delighted to help you learn!
Prime Timers! Is your iPhone driving you iCrazy? Tortured by your tablet? Then this program is for you! Basic help with your iPhone, Android, or tablet devices will be offered on Wednesday, August 28, at 1:30 PM here at the library. Please call ahead (717-684-2255) and let us know you will be coming and what kind of device(s) you will be bringing. Program led by our operations manager Heather.
