Everyone knows Lisa’s fondness for her feline furbabies: since we have a Reading Therapy dog, why not a Reading Therapy CAT? Yes, you read that correctly….”Biggie”, the Maine Coon cat, will be coming on Saturday, November 5, at 10 AM. Please come out and meet Biggie and sharpen your reading skills by sharing a story with him. (Biggie likes any type of story; he’s not particular). Please join us on Saturday, November 5, at 10 AM!

Since it is now the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period, The Lancaster County Office of Aging APPRISE program offers free impartial assistance to Medicare beneficiaries during scheduled appointments. Medicare beneficiaries with Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are encouraged to compare their current plans (in their 2017 format) with other plans available during 2017. Plans can change significantly from year to year and it’s important to be aware of those changes in order to select the coverage that best fits your needs. Changes made during the Annual Enrollment Period go into effect on January 1, 2017.
APPRISE counselors will be at the Columbia Public Library on Thursday November 3, from 10 AM to 4 PM and Tuesday, November 22, from 10 AM to 4 PM. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Part D Prescription Drug Plan, and want to make an appointment to meet with an APPRISE counselor, call Lancaster County Office of Aging, 299-7979 or 1-800-801-3070 or email the agency at aging@co.lancaster.pa.us . Please do not call the library to register for an appointment.
Also providing assistance to Medicare recipients during Open Enrollment is Highmark. They will be visiting on Wednesday, November 9, from 3:30 to 8 PM and Monday, November 21, from 10 AM until noon. To register for this program, call 1-888-919-7787. Please do not call the library.
Our Young Adult Book Clubs got off to a great start on October 19 with our discussion of “Everything Everything”. Imagine being allergic to everything – so much that you must live in a hermetically sealed home? This has been Maddie’s life for 18 years – until Ollie moves in next door. The resulting relationship brings to light a secret that rocks Maddie’s world. All following books will be decided upon by student vote.
Our next meeting will be November 16. Seventh and eighth graders will be reading “Butter” by Erin Lange. A lonely obese boy everyone calls “Butter” finds comfort in only his saxophone. Butter comes up with a morbid idea – he is going to eat himself to death-live on the Internet-and everyone is invited to watch. Butter expects pity, insults, and indifference but what he gets are morbid cheerleaders rallying around his deadly plan. As their dark encouragement grows, it begins to feel a lot like popularity. And that feels good. But what happens when Butter reaches his suicide deadline? Can he live with the fallout if he doesn’t go through with his plans? Seventh and eighth graders meet from 1:50 to 2:37 – you must sign out with your teacher and agree to contract in order to attend. See Mr. White for more info.
Senior high book club also meets on November 16 – from 2:45 until 3:30. Their selection for November is “Baby Doll” by Hollie Overton. Held captive for eight years, Lily has grown from a teenager to an adult in a small basement prison. Her daughter Sky has been a captive her whole life. But one day their captor leaves the deadbolt unlocked. This is what happens next… to Lily, to her twin sister, to her mother, to her daughter — and to her captor. Fans of “Gone Girl”, “The Girl on the Train”, and “Room” will love this book.
Special thanks to Mr. Mike White for generously allowing us to meet in the comfort of the library.
Rev. Rochenda Dorsey of St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church continues to hold an empowerment program for young women in our basement Community Room on Tuesday evenings at 5 PM. Called “Girlz Rizin’ Up”, the program is designed to promote self-esteem, social skills, stress management for teens, and positive choices. Hear stories of real-life girls in actual situations. All girls in grades 6 through 12 are invited to attend. Please call Reverend Dorsey at 332-0988 with any questions. The group meets every Tuesday at 5 PM – dinner is provided!
Family Fun Night – join us for a Paint Your Own Canvas and LEGO Build event. On Wednesday, November 16, join us to paint an 8 by 10 canvas in whatever way you choose. Please wear old clothing or a paint smock. Event begins at 6 PM. There is a limit of 20. Please call 717-684-2255 or email lgreybill@columbia.lib.pa.us to register. Caregiver must stay – ages 5 to 13 are welcome to paint and build with LEGOs afterward! LEGOs are for library use only and are not to be taken home – thank you. (LEGOs courtesy of the Library Services Technology Act grant). Sorry, no walk-ins.
We are so happy with our attendance at PreSchool Pals! It seems we have found a right day and time to suit our preschoolers and their caregivers: Monday mornings at 10:30 AM.
Dates and topics for November:
November 6: “Owl Be Back” (all about owls)
November 13: “Gobble Gobble”
November 20: “Our Native American Friends”
November 27: no meeting this Monday.
With winter approaching, we’ll be spending a lot more time indoors – why not “Learn to Crochet with Mitzi Sanchez”? Crocheting is really not as difficult as it looks once you get the hang of it. And Mitzi is a fantastic teacher…..very patient and hands-on. For ages 9 and up – and guys are welcome too!! Crocheting is a great way to keep your hands busy and relieve stress – as well as relaxing on a long winter evening. The class is now meeting TWICE a month: Tuesday, November 8, at 6 PM and Tuesday, November 22, at 6 PM. This allows beginners to sharpen their skills and we are also working on Christmas projects of winter wear items for our community Mitten Trees. Beginners are welcome! Some very generous folks have donated many skeins of yarn to us and Mitzi will advise you as to the best size crochet hook to get you started. All you need bring to first meeting is a pair of scissors and a crochet hook, if you have one. If you have a preference for a certain type or color of yarn, bring that along as well. Experienced crocheters, please join us and bring your current project.
Our Community program for November features local historian Randolph Harris: “The Origins of Columbia’s Underground Railroad”. Find out how businessmen William Whipper and Steven Smith used their lucrative shipping business to assist runaway slaves. Date is Monday, November 7, at 6 PM. As always, light refreshments will be served. This will be our last community program until March, as we always go on hiatus during the winter months.

Our newest Museum Family pass is from the make717 Innovation Center, a branch of Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. Located on Clark Street in Lancaster, the Innovation Center offers a “STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Maker” pass to encourage independent, project based learning in the science and technology fields. Each county library, including Columbia, offers two of these new passes.
The passes were made possible through a grant from the Library Services Technology Act. All visitors to make717 need to attend an “Information Session.” These sessions allow time to walk through the makerspace to see the equipment and hear about some of the software. A STEM Maker Pass is not needed to attend an “Information Session.” Go to http://www.make717.org and click on the “Events” tab for the calendar. Select the “Information Session” you want to attend and register for it. You will receive an email confirmation. After you’ve attended an “Information Session,” use the STEM Maker Pass to enter make717 and register for and attend Equipment Orientations, Workshops, and access make717 Innovation Center software
