Our community program for July is “What’s Happening in Columbia” with Mayor Leo Lutz. Monday, July 1, at 6 PM in our conference room.
Columbia Public Library bid farewell to three long-time friends in May and early June.
Gladys Negron volunteered at the front desk of the Columbia Library from 2002-2006. She had a strong Christian faith which she instilled in her entire family. She also passed her love of the library onto her children and grandchildren. Daughter Sharon is part of our staff, daughter Hannah uses the library on a regular basis, granddaughter Shawna is part of our Young Adult book club, and second grader Ezekiel is busy completing his Summer Reading log. Although I never had the pleasure of knowing Gladys personally, I see many of her fine qualities in Sharon. The library is so grateful for Gladys’ contributions through the generations.
Charlie Duncan passed away unexpectedly on Memorial Day. You may remember him as the tall man reading the paper or working on the computer in late afternoons. He is also Sam Edmond’s brother. Charlie always brightened everyone’s day when he came in. He has the distinction of being one of the first African American linemen for PP&L and and a highly ranked member of the Masons.
Clarissa Wolcott was a board member of the Columbia Library for over 30 years. A former kindergarten teacher for the School District of Lancaster, she faithfully served on our board until December 2018. A lifelong resident of Locust Street, Clarissa spent the last few months of her well-lived life at St. Anne’s. The library, along with her many friends, will miss Clarissa’s presence. She was especially excited about our expansion of the library.
You may continue picking up Summer Reading logs through the month of July. Reading requirements to receive tickets vary according to age:
Preschoolers – have 35 books read aloud and complete 10 simple activities.
Ages 5 through 9: read a total of 720 minutes (20 minutes per day for 36 days, one hour per day for 12 days, or any other combination). The 10 activities listed may count as a 20 minute “block”
Ages 10 through 12: Read 1200 minutes total (30 minutes per day for 40 days, 1 hour for 20 days, or any other combination). The 10 activities listed may count as a 30 minute “block”
Teens: Read a total of 28 hours. The 10 activities listed count as a 1 hour “block”
Library Summer Reading programs are now held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a few afternoon exceptions. We want to be sure children can also participate in the fun of “The Edible Classroom” by growing (and eating) their own healthy foods! Edible Classroom runs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning at 9 AM. Library Summer Reading is Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10 AM.
Our first July Summer Reading program takes place at Sahd’s Metal Recycling. Dan Sahd will be giving us a tour of the entire facility including the cranes, shearing, and welding areas. You MUST wear closed toed shoes to participate in the tour – no flip-flops, sandals, or crocs. Tuesday, July 2, at 10 AM at Sahd’s (1045 Lancaster Avenue).
There will be no program on Thursday, July 4 – the library will be closed. Happy Independence Day!
Tuesday, July 9, takes us on a journey “Apollo Mission to the Moon” with the North Museum of Nature and Science. Get ready for some lunar explorations! Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the historic mission that landed the first astronauts on the moon through hands-on experiences. Explore the moon’s surface in preparation to designing a lunar lander. This program is designed for grades 1 to 6. It involves cocoa powder, so PLEASE wear old clothing or bring an old t-shirt. Tuesday, July 9, at 10:30 AM in Park Gym (note time change).
CHI Dental Health services returns on Thursday, July 11 with Hank’s Sense-sational Story Time! Hank the Health Hero helps you learn about your body as you look, listen, touch, and smell your way through one sense-sational day! Tommy, our Reading Education Assistance Dog, will be here today so that you can read aloud to him after the puppet show. Books will be provided or you can bring your own. Thursday, July 11, at 10 AM in Park gym. Ages 3 to 9.
The bloodhound program scheduled for July 12 has been cancelled due to health issues of the presenter. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Monday, July 15, brings one of our best loved performers – juggler Chris Ivey. The date has been changed for this show. The gym floor is being waxed in August, when Chris was originally scheduled. Since juggling cannot be done outdoors in sunlight, Chris agreed to come on Monday, July 15 instead. If you have never seen Chris perform, prepare to be amazed as he juggles everything from plates to knives – and even a sword and an axe! For all ages. Monday, July 15, at 1 PM (again after Edible Classroom) – Park gym.
A Columbia native and his drug sniffing dogs visit Tuesday, July 16. Fred Nell has been bringing “Sadie”, his rescue mixed breed for several years now. As a result of her many hours of training, Sadie is able to differentiate between various types of illegal drugs and also can locate explosives. Sadie now has a sister, “Piper”, a German Shepherd who is also being trained in searches. See how Sadie and Piper locate dangerous substances and also take the time to play some ball with them! This program is listed as in the Park gym, but it may be held in Locust Street Park at the gazebo if the weather is nice. For all ages – Tuesday, July 16, at 10 AM.
Abracadabra! Magician John Andrews joins us on Thursday, July 18 at 10 AM. John’s shows are highly interactive and involve lots of audience participation. Show is for all ages.
The Columbia Borough Fire Department leads off a first responder series in our Summer Reading program line-up. Chief Doug Kemmerly will be bringing his firefighters from Station 80 on Tuesday, July 23, at 10 AM. There will be a read aloud story, safety demonstrations, and a look at firefighters’ gear and the fire trucks. Sparky will be there too! Be sure to bring a camera, as the children have the opportunity to sit in the fire trucks. Tuesday, July 23, at 10 AM. Park gym and playground
Following the firefighters on Thursday, July 25, are the Columbia Borough Police Department. Officer Amy, Officer Ed, and Officer Justin will provide opportunities to look at gear such as handcuffs and Kevlar vests. Children will also be able to sit in the cruisers. Important safety tips and a story will be shared with the children as well. For all ages. Thursday, July 25, at 10 AM – Park gym and playground.
Our young adult book club members voted to meet on July 25 at 1 PM on the library terrace to discuss the book “Gone” by Michael Grant. In this dystopian society, everyone over age 15 vanishes. Animals are mutating and bullies have free reign. Sam and Astrid must figure out a way to survive the nightmare and somehow return to a more normal world. If you would like to join us and need a copy of the book, please stop in the library and let Lisa or Patti know.
Summer reading programs will now take place in the Park cafeteria or gazebo as the gym floor waxing begins July 29.
Our last group of first responders are the Columbia Q R S. This provides a unique opportunity to see first hand the medical equipment used before an ambulance even arrives. Learn the difference between a paramedic and an emergency medical technician. The importance of children knowing their correct address and phone number, as well as proper use of 911 will also be emphasized. Children will be permitted to try on gear and get in the vehicles, time permitting. All ages. Tuesday, July 30, at 10 AM – Park cafeteria and playground.
Our yarn arts classes are continuing in July. Crochet will be held July 2 and 9 beginning at 6:30 PM. The crochet-along project for July is dishcloths. There will be a hiatus on July 16 and 23, and Kasey will return with a special program on July 30.
Knitting will be held July 11 and 25 at 7 PM, with no class on July 4 or 18. Absolute beginners are welcome at both of our yarn arts classes – Gaile and Kasey are delighted to help you learn!
The Prime Timers have returned for July! This will be the first time for taking the program “on the road” to St. Peter’s Apartments and Trinity House Apartments. Join Lisa Greybill (me) and Steve Bergey as we feature the Northwest River Trail and how Prime Timers can enjoy its hiking and bicycling opportunities. We are so fortunate to have this beautiful trail so close by – get outside and enjoy it, regardless of your fitness level! The program will be held at the following dates and times:
Monday, July 22: St Peter’s Apartments at 10 AM
Monday, July 22: Trinity House Apartments at 11:30 AM
Stop in at a session and find out how you can make the most of this paved and ADA-accessible trail.
On July 30 at 6:30 PM, Kasey Patterson will present a “Financial Wellness Workshop”. A major cause of stress and anxiety are money issues. This free event, sponsored through Primerica, is designed to help you learn to manage your money and alleviate some of the stress about planning for your future. This is NOT a sales pitch nor is it designed to sell products or services. It is simply a free informative session. For more information, visit http://www.primericaworkshops.com/
July 31st presents the river trail hike and bike program again, with some special guests. Scott Barrows, of Lancaster Recumbent, and Jeremy Hunter, of Lancaster Velo, will be joining us. This program will be held in the evening at 6:30 PM in Locust Street Park. Recumbent bikes are the bikes with a larger seat (and often three wheels) that sit closer to the ground. If you have been thinking about getting a bike or starting trail riding, this would be a good time to get your questions answered. Both Scott and Jeremy feel that all people should be able to enjoy the sport of cycling and can even custom design or make alterations for any special needs you may have. For more information, visit https://lancasterrecumbent.com/ or https://www.lancastervelo.com/.
We are hoping the evening programming time will allow many people to attend. This event is for all ages, including children.
